There is more carbon dioxide in the air now than in the last 800,000 years. Urgent action is needed to actively re-position carbon into soils. As one of the highest emitters per capita, and the 3rd largest exporter of fossil fuels, Australia is a significant contributor to global emissions.
Soil carbon is a low cost, long term solution that re-positions emissions from the atmosphere back into the soil. Humans are proficient at transferring carbon from the earth into the atmosphere. Our challenge now, is to get even better at reversing the process.
Australia is ranked 2nd in the world for the highest area of agricultural land per person (18.3ha / person). Only Mongolia is higher with 41.2ha per person, however agricultural land area is smaller.
Modest SOC projects on Australian agricultural soils would re-position 8.7billion tonnes of CO2-e each year (26% of global emissions). This would create export revenue that exceeds that of fossil fuel, and simultaneously increase Australian food and fibre revenue.
